To make the long story short--
We have been the victim of 2 crimes in Chicago in 8 months. The wife is frustrated, I'm frustrated.
We are considering moving to the suburbs.

With that said, I work in Oak Park.
Due to the nature of my work, Oak Park and River Forest are not an option.

The complex must have elevator, in-unit washer/dryer

Bonus points for:
-- Being near public transit (PACE, Metra okay)
-- Area that is bike friendly (I have biked 20 miles one way to work before)
-- Being able to walk to a few amenities such as a grocery store, coffee shop.

We are currently paying $1,775 with parking for a studio (1490 rent, 35 utilities, 250 parking). I don't foresee exceeding that.

Of the communities we have toured, we have most liked
https://www.amli.com/apartments/chic...ield/deerfield

But now we are overwhelmed at options and are hoping for some assistance in finding additional communities to consider

Check out http://www.uptownlagrange.com Or https://www.elmhurst255.com

Elmhurst (has prarie path) and La Grange (has salt creek trail) are awesome (and safe) communities... These are luxury complexes in equally fun downtown hearts that will easily help you not miss the city...

Those newer apts in Deerfield would be nice (zero crime, btw) but nothing is really walking distance nearby.

I know It has an organic garden, bike repair facility inside... among other cool things. Also, can't BBQ on patio.
But it's the strongest contender. About a half mile walk to anything...

I think LaGrange would be a good choice for you. Uptown is right in the main downtown area and walking distance to everything that’s there, including the shops/restaurants and metra.

In Elmhurst, Elm Creek Apartments has an elevator and in-unit washer. Price will be in your range. Its about 10 miles west of Oak Park.

I would try looking for work outside of Illinois. Try Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana....anywhere other than Chicago. Why pay ridiculous taxes only to be a victim of crime and where you will now live your life constantly on the lookout.

By the way, Illinois is the only state that is losing population. One good thing here is they will likely lose 2 congress-critters (certainly 1, but hopefully 3) come 2022 once redistricting happens following the 2020 census.

I see what you’re saying; however, my professional license does not transfer between states.

You can always apply for a new professional license in your new state. Your family's quality of life and well being would go up significantly. The tax savings alone living here in Indiana are in the thousands and with the recent Federal Tax Reform's cap on the SALT deduction those living in high tax states like Illinois stand to lose the most.

That requires going through the process all over again, including the required supervision hours, testing, etc. It's not as easy as just taking a test. I get it, but it would also be a huge pay cut. I get what you are saying, but sometimes jumping states isn't as easy as just packing up. I'm trying to do our best within our limitations.

Additionally, my wife and I are happily married gay couple. We've been on the receiving end of hate crimes in less accepting environments and we would absolutely factor that in if we were to jump states.
