Seemed pretty straightforward to me. Surprise at it costing that much.

I don’t understand how OP is surprised. He has a large family and a long list of school requirements spanning grade school to high school. Did he not do a cost of living assessment before commiting to this job and move?!?

So, what am I looking for? A nice, safe place to live, which is characterized by:
  1. Easy commute by public transportation to Northwestern University
  2. Has great schools with ESL (English as Second Language) support, as they're not native English speakers
  3. Has affordable housing that will accommodate the 6 of us.

Which areas should I be focused on?...

Thanks in advance for any advice!

Arnon
FWIW, Here’s a house for rent in Highland Park. Great schools with ESL support/amenities nearby. Short walk to Metra stop- about 25min to Davis St/Evanston, quick walk to NU.
