Elmhurst was on the short list but LG and OP are an easier commute into the city which won't be every day or even necessarily every week. I'm moving from Lakeview which I like, but I'm done with the city I think.

As I previously commented La Grange is very safe. Spend some time there looking around. One other thing you might want to do is look up park districts and libraries in the areas you are thinking of moving to. You can get an idea of what towns have to offer for families that way.

LG will very likely *seem* safer than OP - and by many metrics, parts if it are safer that OP. I second visiting the areas and getting a feel for it.

I've been to LG twice now and toured some homes. My first trip, I wasn't wow'd but I went back today and drove around the historic district and now I "get it". Maybe because the kids were out of school this time and it felt more homey. It is very cute and I see the desirability. There are a few blocks south of 47th that seem nice as well, but primarily I stayed north of 47th.

SummerGirl - glad you picked a nice day to explore and had a positive experience... Lots of construction all over downtown La Grange right now so pardon the dust... Hopefully you got to see and feel the energy there also - DTLG is known for its vibrancy and events. The main road is getting redone and there is a huge roof top seafood based sports bar and restaurant being built with a crane in the heart. Also a brewery next to fountain is being worked on... its just kinda crazy here right now... anything North of 47th is the historic district/most core + train walkable/highly priced...

Next time grab a coffee or tea at Owl and Lark while here...

BTW if your looking at downtown commute its 18min express and 28min else... very hard to beat that...

Thanks!
What about the area east of La Grange Rd by Cossitt? Or by the Country Club?
I'm not sure that I HAVE to be within walking distance of downtown. I'm sure it's nice but is it necessary to pay the premium for that if I'm not dying to live that close?

East of LG rd still historic and will give same feel (and same cost) as west...

If you go South of 47th you will save a fortune going into that side which is also still bike-able...

Checkout La Grange Park next door - just across Ogden. You can save significant there also and still get great schools.
