We are relocating to Naperville from Connecticut. We have a water ski boat, and are wondering where locals go boating? We are very fortunate to have a 5800 acre lake 15 minutes from our home, and are wondering if there is anything close in proximity to Naperville. Also, does anyone know if there are boat slips available to rent for the season?

There are lakes and reservoirs suitable for water-skiing in the greater region, but not a great abundance, and none particularly close by. Some folks head "downstate" into the more agricultural regions of Illinois as well as neighboring states of Indiana or Wisconsin where things are somewhat more affordable. In decades past there were more vacationers in Lake Co but as that has "surbanified" so the access is harder.

Lake Michicigan itself is somewhat skiable, and the Chicago Park District as well as other lakeside towns have slips and or/access. Chicago Harbors - Westrec Marinas (broken link)

If you are serious about water skiing there are some clubs in the area that are fairly "hard core": Illinois Waterski Federation - Club Listings (http://iwsf.waterski.org/clubs.htm - broken link)

We are also from CT and moved to Naperville 10 years ago and love it. I laughed, however, when our realtor showed us the local Naperville "beach"! It is a quarry that the park district has turned into a beach. It is a much loved spot during the summer! Lake Michigan is surely a large lake, but like the other person who posted, most folks head south and up to Wisconsin for recreational waterskiing. You will love Naperville, we have never looked back!

Right, although there ARE quarrys in the region (and maybe even some strip mine sites...) that are skiable the Naperville "beach" is not one of them. It is set up like a giant municipal pool. The water can get a little murky, but they test it and it is nice facility.

Speaking of murky -- there are skiable rivers in Illinois too, in fact probably MOST water skiing in the state is om rivers, personally not a fan of the water quality on the slower moving rivers, but some people love it. Remember keep your mouth SHUT and your legs CROSSED...
