Guyz,

I am moving to Chicago in next 4-5 months from Milwaukee. I am looking for a affordable place to buy home in a good school district. Less than $270K. And within 30-45 mins drive from Chicago. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Josh

So are you wanting to move to Chicago, or the suburbs? I always get confused by these questions because I'm never sure, your question sounds like you want to live in the burbs, is that the case?

I guess this leads me to my next question. Why do people say that want to live in Chicago when they don't? Don't get me wrong, this is not an anti-burb post, I like the burbs, someday I might move to one of them (I moved out of the burbs Jan of '92, so it has been awhile), and there indeed excellent burbs of this town, but why not make it clear that is what you are looking for?

Hi! I would recommend the Schaumburg, Hoffman Estates area. Check out the scores online for District 54 (K-8) and District 211 (9-12). Depending on traffic, the commute may be a bit longer but for that price range, you can't beat the school district. Good luck!

Smile About Schools In The Area

Hi Josh,
I am a nanny who lives out in Hoffman Estates and I also lived about 5 minutes from the border of Wisconsin, I went to the schools out there at Johnsburg School District 12 in Johnsburg IL, which is in McHenry County. now i know that you are looking to be within about 45 minutes of Chicago but if you would like a school district that is high in scores for testing and graduation success rates, i highly recommend looking at these school districts in comparison. here are the links for the schools themselves as well as the schoolmatters.com comparisons.

Also you could take the train to chicago from the local stations.

http://www.schoolmatters.com/app/fav...lse/sel=971971

All the schools for you to compare against each other (choose the box and click compare) except Johnsburg, leave that to compare after you look at all the 211 schools. Hoffman Estates, Palatine, Conant, Schaumburg and Fremd are all the same district, a total of 5 schools, of course Johnsburg is not one of those 5.

http://www.jburgd12.k12.il.us/ (broken link) - Johnsburg School District Website includes all schools K-12

http://www.d211.org/ - Hoffman Estates School District (vey big, several schools in district) includes all schools K-12

You should check out Homewood or Flossmoor in the southern suburbs. Excellent schools, Park district golfclubs, and quaint downtowns. The train from either of these towns is about 35 min. from the city. check out
www.homesweethomewood.com or www.HFisgreat.com.
you can also easily drive to the city, but alot of expressway construction this year

Default Southwest Burbs are nice...

In the price range you are looking for, you can still get the most bang for your buck in the Lockport area before I-355 is completed... Then prices will skyrocket making this area a complete gold mine!

If you can settle for a bit of a smaller home, Oak Lawn, Worth, Orland Hills, Tinley Park, and Oak Forest all are nice areas to consider with excellent schools, low taxes, and easy access to the city via, rail, freeway, or arterial roads.

Good luck!!!

I would recommend Gurnee. Gurnee is pretty close to Wisconsin. Gurnee has pretty good schools not acclaimed but good. They tend to be very large. Gurnee is very affordable it is about an hour with fast moving traffic to the loop and up to 2 hours with bad traffic. I would also consider Libertyville or Mundelien. Libertyville has a nice towncenter. I would also recommend Schaumburg or Hoffman Estates. Schaumburg is a minor step above Hoffman Estates. You will be hard pressed to find anything on the North Shore but got REALTOR.com - Real Estate Listings & Homes For Sale and enter your criteria and look at Evanston and Skokie. Evanston and Skokie are like a small dose of Chicago. They are not typical suburban they are inner-ring railroad suburbs. They are about 30-40 minutes from the loop by car or train.
