We're moving to the Chicago area. My partner will be working in the city and I will be working near Elmhurst. We like to listen to good jazz, enjoy good food and like to live near large parks/reservations to walk our dog. We would like to buy a house for under $500K. Suggestions?

I don't know much about the western suburbs though I have relatives that live in Elmwood Park , which is about 20 minutes (8.38 miles) from Elmhurst. I don't know if Elmwood Park is far enough west for you though I can tell you my relatives enjoy living in Elmwood Park.

The median sales price for homes in Elmwood Park from March 9th to May 9th was $214,500.

There are music venues scattered throughout suburbs as well as dog parks. Through the Western suburbs there is a prairie path that is popular for runners, bikers, and dog walkers also. There are similar path systems throughout Chicagoland. I think you probably want to give the forum a little more info. How large of a home are you hoping for in your price range? Do you and your partner have or plan to have children? If you are working near Elmhurst there are many suburbs to choose from (Elmhurst included), but they all have their own character, diversity levels, and/or distinct features. Let us know more and I'm sure we can give more help. Good luck.

Forest park, Oak Park, parts of Berwyn would be OK. Stay on the train line, all of these burbs, have el access. If you want to go farther west, Wheaton and Glen Ellyn have trains to the city as well but it is a longer commute. Elmhurst is very expensive and very non-diverse.

Thanks for your response(s). We have grown kids and would like house with 1500-2500 sf, garage, good light. We also spend our free time biking and walking the dog, cultural activities (music to visual arts) and enjoy a good/interesting meal out once a week. We have all of that in Boston....but employment is brining us to the midwest.

DuPage County is where Elmhurst is located. For 500K, you can get a great home in Elmhurst, Villa Park, or Downers Grove.

A lot of the White Sox players used to live in Oak Brook and Oak Brook Terrace, which are very close to the places I mentioned above.

Naperville, near downtown if possible. Its pretty rowdy on summer weekends, but not overly so. Amenities and festivals/cultural events are second to none. Give it a try, Im sure youll love it.
