Let's say from downtown ... going north, south and west...

Using expressways.

How long does it take to hit open fields with very little to no homes in the area?

Do you mean consistent cornfields? There is a cornfield near the WalMart/Sam's Club in Wheeling, about 30 miles from downtown (North, Northwest), but you are definitely still in suburbia. Headed on the Interstates.. on 94 you probably don't hit consistent cornfields until you get past Milwaukee, but the area between six flags and the WI-50 exit has a lot of corn... on 90 it's maybe 6-7 miles after the Woodfield Mall... on 88 you definitely need to get past Aurora, and then it becomes consistently corn fields after that... on 55 it's around Joliet, starting near Plainfield, but more consistently near I-80, as Shorewood and South Plainfield have built up some subdivisions in recent years... on 57 or 394 you probably hit them the quickest, just past US 30, on 90/94 going East into Indiana, there are cornfields just after the Portage exit, but since the Interstates are lines with more trees in that direction, you will have to actually get off the highway to see them.

40-50 miles or so depending on where you go. Drive west on 88 past Aurora and you're pretty much there.

It varies a lot from highway to highway. I think 57 is the one where you hit cornfields the earliest - around Monee or so (about 40 miles). If you're on 80 you need to get past Joliet (about 50-60 miles), 90 is about 50 miles as well. Going north or south you need to go a long way before you hit cornfields.

It's pretty clear cut on I-88 when I go back home.

43 miles from downtown to I-88 and the Highway 56 interchange. Once you go around that bend after the Highway 56 ramp you're suddenly on a 4 lane rural interstate.

I believe going west would be the shortest to consistent cornfields.

IL 29s and 39s change to farms and ranches rather quickly after you cross I-80.
