Chicago, I hear, is not even in the top 10 major cities for wind speed. Boston is the windiest major city, according to a 30 min. segment from 2005 I saw on the Weather Channel. However, I don't hear much about this distinction here in Boston; in fact, I had lived here many years as a transplant before hearing it.

The program said Boston is about 11.5 mph vs. the 10th windiest at about 10.5 mph or so...not much difference, actually. After counting down from No. 10 to No. 1, it asked: "What about Chicago? Oh, they come in at No. 13." Again, about 10 mph, so little difference.

Not sure if the data was from 2004 or compiled over time.

But the winds today at Soldier Field were 25 mph before windchill.

I don't think the nickname came from the *actual* winds, but.. the term was first used in 1858

Origins of the Nickname “The Windy City”

Quote:
The earliest known reference to the Windy City is from 1858 in a Chicago Tribune article, and the first known effort to stick the city of Chicago wit h the name is from 1876, involving Chicago's rivalry.
In a side note, the oldest GBLT newspaper in Chicago is the Windy City Times which was started in 1985.

"Windy City"
