Hi. I'm a graduate student at Northwestern and I was considering auditioning for the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. I don't own a car, so I take the Metro or CTA, but I was just wondering if I would be able to take me large trombone case on the train or not? I've never had to before, so I just don't want to run into any trouble in the future.

I think so. As long as the trombone case is able to fit on the rack above the lower level of the Metra, I don't think anyone would care. You just have to be careful when moving it around. The last thing you want to do is whack someone in the head with a hard case after they've had a long, stressful day at work. Next thing you'll know you're being referred to in the next month's "On the Bi-Level."

As for CTA, I'd say that a heck of a lot more is acceptable on the CTA trains. I see people wheel in full-sized strollers. I'd say that give you plenty of ammunition if someone criticizes you for carrying your trombone case.

You will have no trouble, though traveling at rush hour might get it a little banged up.

I don't know about Metra's policies exactly, but the CTA's position basically boils down to: If you can carry it, you can bring it.

Should be fine on Metra. Many conductors will ask you to use the luggage rack rather than a seat, which is reasonable.

Just FYI, it's Metra, not Metro.

METRA usually has you place it in the luggage compartment, but if it isn't crowded, you can place it on the floor or on the seat next to you. CTA L doesn't care what you do with it as long as you can carry it on. CTA bus may ask you to place it in a corner or directly in front of you.

Gah, sorry about that. I just got back from D.C. It's strange because I was calling the Metro the Metra in D.C. and now I'm calling the Metra the Metro.

Whatever you do, please be careful with your instrument. I understand it might be worth more than the average home, but still...

Google "Rachel Barton"...
