if they took an initial reading, estimated your usage in the meantime, and then took a reading after a year then it's no scam. while it sucks and nobody wants a huge payment like that all at once, they are just charging you for the difference between the readings and the estimate. sounds legit.

You may be paying for all the public areas in the building -- hall lights, washing machines, etc. If the original owner of the building occupied your apartment at one time, they may have set it up so they received the electricity for the apartment and the public areas on one bill. Just something to think about.

Your place probably sat unoccupied for a long time and were paying the rate for a vacant apartment. Most ComEd bills are $200-$300 per month, thereabouts.

You should have said you just moved in a month ago.

Just wait until they take one of your $300 payments and apply that to a 'deposit' then you'll see how crooked them bastages really are!

They only take a deposit if you have bad or shaky credit.
