In 1979 I got sick as a dog from the Giordano's on 107th St. on the East Side and still I can't stand to even look at it.

As has been mentioned earlier what Giordano's makes (at least in 1979 ) is not a "downtown" Uno's style deepdish but more of a stuffed, gooey casserole kind of thing, like Nancy's also does. So I don't think comparisons with Uno's, Malnati's, Geno's and Ricobene's are quite valid. It is a Chicago style of pizza but a different style.

Another Chicago style is thick crust; where the crust is thick and bready and baked on a regular sheet not in a dish and cut in squares like a Chicago Thin. Salerno's, on 16th St. in Berwyn and now with a few places around, one on Grand around Racine, is IMO the best example of that style. The Home Run Inn, a famous West Side old school pizza place that many tourists are unaware of uses a crust about half way between a normal thin and a Salerno's style thick.

So that gives four native styles so far---Thin crust, thick crust, deep dish and stuffed.

I know people have already thrown it out there, but I have to chime in for Art of Pizza. It's spectacular and my favorite.

Well, since Drover and several others gave it rave reviews, I finally decided to check out Art of Pizza this afternoon. Ordered myself a slice of stuffed sausage and pepperoni and took a seat at the window counter.

I'm not sure if I liked it better than Giordano's, but I do have to say that it was very good. After I finished, I was tempted to go back up and order a second slice, but I didn't.

That place is just a tad above Uno's out-of-state chain locations. Which translates to not that great.

Good for you. Unless you have tried the rest-you have not tried the best.

There is no objectively best pizza, only preferences. And one person's preference is as valid as another's.

Telling someone their favorite pizza isn't good is like telling a person who's laughing at a joke that the joke wasn't funny.

When I lived in Madison, I visited Giordano's in Milwaukee, and ordered a "pizza for one". Huge mistake, as Giordano's has the largest, thickest pizza slice I've ever seen, and it's largely a cheese pie. The slices had to be half-an-inch thick; if you eat more than 2-3 slices, you could get seriously sick..

Now, this is not necessarily an indictment of Giordano's, since you certainly get your money's worth. Just have a slice or two, and put the rest away for another time...

How can one make a judgement what their favorite is without trying several different places?

My opinion is no less valid than his.

He gave his. I gave mine.
