Searching near me, there's a guy who has to register for "solicitation of a child" and even on the page about him it says that the victim was 17. And yet in the law that describes what "indecent solicitation of a child" is, it says a child under the age of 17.

I don't know the details of the case, but a) 17 is not under 17, and b) even if it were, it's one year difference. And 16 is WAY different than, say, 6

My point?

Registration, by itself, isn't really grounds for considering the offender an irredeemable monster.
I agree with you here, the one size fits all approach to sex offenders could really use some change.

OP, do you know what the sex offender near you is registered for? There are some people who get stuck on the sex offender list for some really dumb things. Like urinating in public or a 19 year old having consensual sex with a 16 year old.

If I had a sex offender on my block, I'd set him up with one of my little cousins then call the cops so that he can get locked up again.

He tried to grab a little girl away from her mother so it's not one of those "he was 18 and she was 17" deals. I believe he did some jail time.

Being a parent with little ones, I don't want this guy anywhere near my house (he lives about 5 doors down). Obviously, I don't let them play out front by themselves, etc but I think this guy knows that we all know about him so he sort of avoids us. None the less, if the authorities made him move due to his proximity to the school, I would be happier.

I would go in person to the police station and ask to talk to the commander. Calling 911 for this is not appropriate.

Sure it is. #1, it's a crime in progress.

#2, it is ok to call 911 for non-life threatening issues - they just need to be happening in real time. That's the key difference, 311 is for service requests, 911 is for problems in the moment.

Operators there direct calls based on severity of the issue, in a case like this they aren't going to send police with sirens blasting, they'll find some police who are close by to pay a visit.

If people can call 911 for people playing a radio too loudly, this qualifies IMO. I don't see how a convicted sex offender accidentally ends up too close to a school.
