Is anyone familiar with the area around South Deering? Years ago my family used to go to a restaurant down there that had great food even though it was in a pretty industrial area. I can't remember the name, but they had lots of little frogs dressed up in different outfits. Does that ring a bell with anyone? The taxidermy frogs were a little strange and that is what I remember the most. For the life of me, I can't remember the name of the place. We had the funeral dinners there for both of my husband's grandparents. It would be great if anyone could tell me the name of the place. Thanks!

Can't say I know much about the area nor do I know what restaurant you're referring to, but I must point out in the spirit of Dave Barry that "South Deering Taxidermy Frogs" would be an excellent name for a rock band.

Default Frog Place

Hi, I now live is Pa. but was a South Sider most of my life. could you possibly be thinking of the popular Fish Rest. that was located right over the border in Indiana. My Grandmother loved the place and they were known for their Frog Legs. I think it was a one word name. maybe a family name. If I can find out I will write more..

That's Phil Schmidt's in Hammond. I think its still there and thriving since there's a casino right across the street! Its been about seven years since I ate there.

We have a winner, sort of. Phil Schmidt's is currently closed, though.

Phil Smidt's could be back / nwi.com (http://www.nwitimes.com/articles/2007/11/02/news/top_news/doc840a832ec12747168625738700040314.txt - broken link)

I have a lot of family from Hammond, but they left decades ago... How old is this place?

Phil Smidt's is from the sixties at least. I first saw the place in 1974. Vogel's (or whatever it was called) across the street on Idpls blvd is closed. I think Purple Cow is still open. I also believe Casa Blanca in East Chicago is still going strong. That's the main eateries around there.

You ever go to Whiting's Pierogi Festival in June? Now, that's a good time!
