Robin Ventura was one of my favorite White Sox players in the 90s, but manager? So much for Terry Francona.

Absolutely astonishing. As a lifelong Sox fan, I'm hoping for the best, but yikes. I was really looking forward to Francona or Sandy Alomar, Jr. or Dave Martinez or maybe even bringing back Tony LaRussa. But I never saw Robin coming back. Wow. We'll see, but I don't have a good feeling about this...

Doesn't this belong on the Sports forum? But why not? Ozzie was a former player and he led the Sox to a World Series victory.

What did Ozzie being a former player have to do with him leading the Sox to the World Championship?

About as much as him having experience as a third base coach did. I think the entire MLB world is surprised at the choice of Ventura. He has no previous managing or coaching experience in professional baseball. Just have to wait and see.

No way the Sox were getting Francona or TLR. Too much $$$.

The players must have requested a handsome manager.

I also think having a lengthy playing career is sufficient experience for managing. I'm happy with the hire.

I like it. He is younger and classier than pretty much anybody else that has been associated with the team since his playing days. It will take a long time and whole lot of luck to get the kind of staff that the Sox can afford to get on field to make it to the playoffs and Robin has a quirky sense of humor that ought to make it worth watching.

Plus he has a scrappy streak. Sox fans love that.

Beat me to it!!!!!!

Now though I have a reason to go to a Sox game. On that off chance Ventura hangs around before or after the game, I could get him to sign that picture of him in the headlock.

With his thoughtful and insightful take on the situation, as usual, here's Bernstein's column:
