I am relatively new to Chicago and an avid ski junkie. I was wondering if anyone had suggestions with regards to nearby ski resorts. Can't wait for the first snow to hit the ground and would like to go somewhere close to have a great skiing experience!

For a quick couple of hours of skiing about an hour from the city try Villa Olivia in Bartlett. For day trips, try Alpine Valley or Wilmot in WI, for a long weekend try Boyne in Michigan.

Lets see. Alpine and Wilmot have about 250' vertical drops. Farther north, Devils Head is about 550' and then farther north Rib Mtn is 750'. You may love it, or it may be a buzzkill and you will plan a trip to the Rockies to get your skiing fix in. By the time you drive to UP of Michigan or far north Wisconsin (porcupine Mtns) you can fly to Keystone/Breckinridge.

Skip the local areas. Unless you are teaching your children

Alpine if you are desperate for a fix

Skip Devils head, chesnut, and cascade, if you are going that far you might as well drive to granite peak (rib mountain)

Best thing to do is take a week off, save some money (1500 minimum) and some sanity and fly to Colorado and rent a car.

If you cant fly mob with some friends by car. 16 hour drive. 600-700 bucks minimum per person. It's possible, I've done it before..

Colorado. You can get a cheap flight to Denver on Southwest or Frontier out of convenient Midway Airport!

I agree with someone else. After going to CO I think all the local places are a waste of time and money. The best Ive been to is Devlis Head, but thats not saying much.

Wilmot is definitely not hardcore, but, if close is the most important thing you can definitely do a day trip there driving from Chicago.

As far as the quality of skiing, the Wisconsin places will just annoy you if you try to compare to the Rockies. However the cost of skiing in CO i high. Sure you may find a cheap flight for yourself, but what if OP has a family of four? Plus hotel rooms are routinely $200 per night for regular low-end chains. It adds up quick, cause you have to feed everyone as well.

As a previous poster said, you're probably looking at $1500 for a CO ski trip. You certainly won't pay anywhere near that driving to Rib Mountain!

Maybe some Alpine skiing after a snow storm here...otherwise, by describing yourself as a ''ski junkie'' you will be disappointed by area skiing. Head west (Rockies) for excellent/real skiing and east (Appalachian, Green, Catskills, Poconos etc) for good to decent skiing...or head way up north to Canada.
