Hi all, I am a 23 year old straight male moving to chicago in a couple of months and need some advice on where to live. I will be working as a young professional in the loop. I like to believe that I am very progressive and 'cultured' (if you want to call it that). I grew up around the world as a kid, so i would love to move to a neighborhood that is diverse and intelligent-aka no frat/sorority. I also think it is important to say that i have NEVER grown up in the suburbs, always big cities. I do like quieter neighborhoods with a park near by. When I do go out for drinks, i like to go to lounges, jazz bars and if i do go out to clubs, it would be house clubs (not top 40 bull sh*t house pop music).

sorry if any of this came off as offensive, but thought I should be as blunt as possible on my preferences as it will be a place I will be living for a while

Thanks in advanced!

The detractors of Lakeview and even Lincoln Park paint an unrealistic picture of mobs of frat boys stumbling through the areas. That is not accurate, even in the most sports bar dense sections of Clark St near Wrigley Field there are an overwhelming number of relatively sedate folks that would probably be closer in character / behavior to yourself than to some joker from Animal House.

Thank You! Again, sorry if I came off as snobby or anything, but the frat scene is really not what I want to be around.....

What are your financial particulars. If money isn't really an issue I would suggest Lakeview for any 20something, but it is fairly expensive. There will be some fratty elements, but they are easy to avoid. I lived there from age 24-26 and loved every minute of it. As for the social scene, if you live near the Redline you can access any kind of bar or club scene you want city-wide. Also, the train from Lakeview to most spots in the Loop is 20-30 minutes.

East Lincoln Park, it's quieter, has great park access and easy to get to the proper jazz venues and only proper house venue (smart bar). Wicker/Bucktown would have been a good rec. 10 years ago and they kind of suck for park space.

West Lake View would be my first suggestion -- Lake View is a big neighborhood and outside of Wrigleyville really isn't all that douchey. The Southport Corridor or Roscoe Village could both be good options an easy distance from the loop via public transit. And, if you're OK w a 1BR I think you could probably make it on your own in those areas without a roomie if you'd prefer that route.
