I wouldn't call South Loop or West Loop "hip" (though I realize that's subjective), but they do have what he seems to be looking for. Ukrainian Village I would say is a little hipper and also a little more affordable than the others.

Roscoe Village and Lincoln Square are ok, much further to downtown by train, your commute will be more than double, and the area isn't as 'trendy' as River North/Gold Coast/Magmile.

It all depends on how you roll and what you want out of a nabe.

You'll need to be more specific about the type of place (finishes) you are interested in.

Isn't Old Town just as pricey as River North?

In terms of the place, I'm not expecting a gut rehab for that price, but I don't have a ****-hole either. Don't want a garden.

Other neighborhoods worth considering are South Loop, West Loop and Ukranian Village. They are all "hip" neighborhoods, close to downtown, with plenty of nightlife and are not collegey. I would also recommend the Near North Side, however, not sure if it would really work with your budget. Unfortunately, viagra triangle does get that annoying college crowd as well.
I do like West Loop, but it seems like the affordable places are closer to Ashland, which isn't the best. I like the restaurants around there, and you can walk to the Loop, but there isn't great L service...

West Loop is totally hip, probably the hottest right now outside Logan as far as the greatest number of hot bars/restaurant openings...South Loop not so much.

Either way, budget with parking remains an issue there.

Indoor Parking in most neighborhoods that aren't the Loop, River North, Streeterville, West loop, South Loop, and Gold Coast is harder to find. You can find it in Lincoln Park and Lakeview and sporadically in other neighborhoods, but it's not nearly as rampant as the aforementioned neighborhoods, but if you do find it be prepared to pay more because it's an indoor spot. Indoor parking at my place in the Gold Coast is $180-$200/month and I bet it's like that at most places (maybe more sometimes, maybe slightly less). My rent is over $1300/month aside from that, so I guess that's out of your price range if you factor in parking, but you might have luck with some Gold Coast places for maybe $1200/month. I have seen a few..I think, but they're older buildings I believe.

I know parking is tough to find, but I can stay with my parents for a few months while I take my time and search.

Speaking of searching, I'm tired of craigslist and Apartment Finders... What resources should I be using other than Domu and Hot Pads?

Rent.com. Any respecting apartment is going to have a listing on there.
