It is limited to certain sections. Very few people would go down to the area around the Museum of Science and Industry and tell you it feels "bad".

It's limited. All in all there are more "bad" sections on the South Side than there are on the North, but there are nice areas in the South, too. There are numerous threads on this here, and crime rates by neighborhood can be found in numerous places online.

Some will swear they love the soutside. I'm beginning to see where I prefer a neighborhood like hydepark and south loop over many north side neighborhoods.

Certain sections. There's a number of normal areas and normal suburbs (which seem like they're part of Chicago) in the south side.

The reason that gigantic area doesn't register in peoples consciousness when they talk about "the south side" is because they intuitively know better than to go there.

There are pockets (Mount Greenwood, some parts of Hyde Park/Kenwood area, oddball places like Hegewisch or a few blocks in places like Historic Pullman), it's a bit more varied than a yes/no question but for the most part, you can pretty much chop Chicago in half and you wouldn't be losing much but headaches and trouble by discarding the lower part.
What would the world lose if all of Chicago were to disappear? A bunch of hubristic racists, ghetto folk and midwestern yokals. Oh, and a large derivatives exchange or two.

Lose if present-day Chicago just stopped being, or if Chicago were wiped from history? The world would lose a lot with the latter.

I was referring to present-day Chicago.

What's your definition of bad?

Unsafe: Some of Chicago's SAFEST neighborhoods are on the south side: Bridgeport, Clearing, Garfield Ridge, Mount Greenwood, Hegewisch.

Lack of Things to Do: Went to Lee's Unleaded Blues in Grand Crossing earlier this year. Absolutely MUST-DO if you consider yourself a Chicagoan. Hyde Park is loaded with culture. South Shore has numerous cultural amenities. Rainbow Beach is supposedly one of the city's most beautiful. There's Chinatown too. Some of the city's best Irish Pubs are in Beverly. Historic Pullman is a wow for any serious US history buff.

Lack of Public Transit: Not as good as the north or west side. Green, Orange, and Red lines all run thru there, but not with as many stops as the other sides of the city. On the bright side, Red line extension coming soon, and hopefully bus rapid transit.

Oh, and there's a baseball team that has won a World championship in the past 100 years on the south side (I'm just sayin.......I'm just sayin.......).

Love the south side, looking forward to spending more time down there.
