Exactly! When I lived in Boston I hated the fact that the T stopped running at 12:30, but it certainly helped keep me from going home alone many nights.

Sounds like he needs to get braver or date meeker women, then. If she's more comfortable walking alone at night than he is, that's likely reflective of a major personality difference that is going to cause friction that goes well beyond transportation preferences.

Now that I don't have to commute out to the 'burbs for work the price of gas isn't as big an issue. It will be interesting to see how some folks get along when gas hits $6 or $7 per gallon. It's coming sooner than you think.

I was biking home today from my LSD workout and the Shell on Ashland & North Ave had regular for around $4.69 a gallon! THAT'S TOO EXPENSIVE FOR ME! So now I rarely drive both my car and minivan! I'm gonna do almost all of my errands and shopping by bike, and I have a great collection of bikes to save gas on! I'm unemployed 4 years now so $4.69 gas is way out of league! Like my new 2005 Dodge Grand Caravan SXT - I kept a record and in 4 months I only drove it 962 miles, less than 3000 miles a year! I only put that much mileage into it because I drove to Peoria [for an interview] and Rockford [Vintage BMX Show]. Most of the time it sits parked and a 15W solar panel keeps the battery from dying down from the minivan not being driven enough. I have an inadequate VW solar panel for my Honda.

What prices of gas do you see around Chicago now? Are you avoiding much driving because gas is too expensive?

Next time I go to Mariano's I'll use my Trek 3.1 with a Burley Nomad!

My advice is to sell one of your $10,000 bikes and buy 2,200 gallons of gas.
