I plan on moving to Chicago soon as possible (i.e. as soon as I get a job up there) and as a Cubs fan (no jokes please, we have heard them before), I really want to move to the northside. I am not a super religious person but I am not atheist by any means. I wondering if there are welcoming liberal/progressive or just mainstream churches on the north side; specifically around Lake View, Lincoln Park, Lincoln Square and the nearby neighborhoods. I would be grateful for any tips.

I do not know about specific churches but check out the United church of christ. they are very welcoming and liberal. I do know there are quite a few of them around.

Here are some suggestions. Some congregations may be more liberal than others.

I seem to recall seeing an ELCA Lutheran church flying the rainbow flag in Boystown. That should qualify as Progressive/Liberal.

Here's a startup church that sounds promising:

Mosaic Church in Chicago - a community in Wicker Park

and, another:

Destination Church | Contemporary, Non Denominational, Chicago Church

You probably want to look for a non-denominational church. There are growing numbers of them around the country!

You might also be interested in the small Unitarian congregation on the North side, Second Unitarian Church on W. Barry Second Unitarian Church Chicago: Chicago, IL or the larger one not too far north in Evanston , Unitarian Church of Evanston Unitarian Church of Evanston . Both are theologically liberal, politically consciousm, and welcoming to gays and lesbians.
