I am from new orleans, and i intend on moving to chicago to go to LOYOLA law school (in chicago). I have some concerns about the city though, I have heard that chicago natives are impersonal and somewhat rude! I would like to know if this information is true, and if is is i would like to know how to win the natives over.

p.s i find this information hard to believe because my boyfriend is one of the most down to earth people i know, and he is originally from chicago!

comments would be appreciated

thanks

S

Not rude, reserved is more the word.

However, I take exception to the drivers. Everyone seems to have big man syndrome around here behind the wheel of a car. Will tail-gate you, cut you off ridiculously, flip you off, even threaten you in their cars but once they get out of the car they turn into wimps. Mr. Tough Guy attitude seems to prevail in Chicago and the suburbs, in the car of course.

I can understand it, the traffic congestion is a way of life here, and if you only drive five miles over the speed limit like me, people are going to get PO'd. But at the same time, it is still ridiculous.

With such a huge city that is such a melting pot, NO ONE can stick a label on how people act..There are wonderful, down home, open friendly people here, and jerks,,just like where you are from. Dont you find you usually get back what you put out?

I was born and raised in the South, where friendliness is next to godliness, and I can truly say that I've always been pleased by the friendliness of the people here. There are jerks here like there are anywhere, and most people are a little more reserved, but overall, people are very friendly, imo.

Depends where you're at in Chicago. I've lived in the Southwest side of Chicago (Garfield Ridge, Beverly) and some of the people I've went to school with do have an ego and appear arrogant. More than likely it's because of the pride they have in their neighborhood. Since Beverly is so 'gangsta' they know how to ball and their garbage cans say "City of Chicago."

Hey, that's what they say when I'm in Beverly. But it's more the young kids, high school and college, that live in the remote area.

The only thing that I can definitively point to and say "This is Chicago-style Rudeness" is our tendency to remain quiet in the face of some incident and then immediately run to tell our friends.

I don't know why we do this. It's very Chicago. We hold in whatever we're thinking while we're being treated badly, or dealing with some rude person, or see something that amuses us... No expression whatsoever. But a few minutes later we're talking to friends and gossiping like crazed hens.

Pretty much describes my work environment.
