I'm surprised they are ranked this high.

Why surprised? They don't win but they are a very beloved team in a very large city.

They'd be in the top 5 if they had a better stadium.

Don't the Bears have one of the smallest stadiums in the NFL? I would think that would be a driver in this.

THE smallest stadium in the NFL and they don't own it which also hurts.

Default Revenue from just stadium size is kinda meaningless...

There is a way to factor the number of "sold out games" and the size of the season ticket holders as a function of local market popularilty but the bigger factors are how the team "sells" outside of its home market. Things like TV rating for Monday night / Thursday games, team appareal / logo merchandise and quality of sponsorship deal (Verizon, BP, Chase, United Airlines, Boeing, McDonalds, Geico, Navistar etc...) are much more important measures of "value"...

The deal the Bears got on the renovation of Solider Field and the expansion of skyboxes as well as better cuts of revenue from concessions and a more permanent "logo & appareal" store all put the total stadium deal in the top quarter of NFL teams. The shaky status of the Chicago Park District in finding quality alternative uses of the facility is something that is rarely talked about but a HUGE driver in why the Bears were given so much latitude is how the renovation went. The questionable aesthics of the exterior of the stadium and the attrocius staffing issues that make getting into the facility for events are things that are typical of the less than "sympatico" relationship the Bears ownership has ALWAYS had with the Park District... The Park District could never afford to maintain Solider Field as even a "ruin" without the HUGE revenues recieved from the Bears and the fans yet the core mission of the Park District is far removed from running a first class sports facility.

I have quite a few NFL team DVDs from the 1960s and 70s, and halfway through the presentation, many would have a brief commercial from United Airlines, with the statement.."15 out of 16 NFL teams fly the friendly skiies of United.."

I always wondered which team was the exception....

They would always show players, on board, playing cards, sleeping with their mouths open, occasionally schmoozing with the stewardesses ( now there's a 60s term), and diving into their prepared meals ( remember being served on airlines??)..

Default Probably has some "local business" angle...

United is headquartered in Chicago and with their "hubs" in / near most Tier 1 NFL cities it is a natural sponsorship.

I suspect whichever team has an "alternate" sponsor for their flights has a local HQ angle -- maybe Cowboys for American or something...
