This is a recently updated Google Street View image of a block on Chicago's far south side.

Do you see the cornfields? I love it! Can't believe it's within the city limits.

Also, look at this:

That's great. There are also a couple lots on Bingham St. in Logan Square that are fully planted with corn. You can see them to your right just before the Western stop (inbound).

I repped you too recently to do it again. My guess is most people either don't know the motto, or don't know what it means.

NYC has had "greened" rooftops for years. Community gardens are not new. It's a lot of work and thieves love 'em. In some towns, small community parks with trees are gradually replacing the worst areas that were razed. It's cheaper than suing slumlords and it prevents another ghetto from popping up.

It means "city in a garden". You know, Google is a pretty neat search engine. You should try it sometime.

Ha. That's what is generally called a garden, not a cornfield, but it's definitely nice to see more vacant lots being used for this purpose. Some are even closer to the city center.

Chicago has many symbols of agriculture all over the city. Off the top of my head I can think of Ceres (Roman goddess of agriculture) atop the Board of Trade, and the ornate carvings above the Harold Washington Library have allusions to agriculture to symbolize the bounty of the Midwest. I think Ceres is on the library as well. She must be the patron goddess of The Windy City or something.
