We, family of 4, are planning road trip in 2nd week of Jun from Chicago to NYC. Planning to start on Saturday morning. Take a halt in midway (?), spend night there and drive down to NYC Sunday morning. Hope I will be able to get some help planning road trip.
- Since we are travelling with two kids 9 and 3, not planning nonstop drive to NYC. 8/9 hour drive on Saturday. Suggestions where we can take halt and spend night?
- NYC hotels are expensive. I am looking for something within range of $125 per night. Where should we plan on staying in NYC or nearby?
- Suggestions for things to do in NYC with 9 and 3 years old? 3 night 4 days in NYC
Thanks,
KA

Man, that's a lot of toll road/raod.

I'm not sure I would take two small children to NYC with that kind of hotel budget, to be honest. "Nearby" doesn't really count for much in NYC, because even if you're only 10-20 miles away it could take you a long time to get into the city, and the cost of parking in Manhattan (or a cab to get there) would quickly eat up your hotel savings. Maybe you could look into the cost and time of trains into the city from places in NJ, and price hotels in that area?

You could also try hotwire or priceline and see if you get lucky on a room in the city. Of course, even then you're still going to have to pay to park.

You may want to ask on NY/NJ boards. They're going to know more about their area than we are.

As someone who used to live in NYC I would suggest not going with a 9 and a 3 year old and a car with a $125/night budget. That is a combination that is going to just not go well. Heck it may take you an hour just to get into the city once you see the skyline, and for that price your hotel is going to be garbage. You are going to be tired and exhausted and are in for a rude awakening IMO.

What about driving to suburban New Jersey or Conneticut and then relying on the region's commuter trains? If you can avoid "peak of rush hour" I have found Grand Central Station to be worthy or exploring in itself. The range of hotels outside NYC ought to more affordable...

You can probably stay near one of the airports for a bit above that price, NYC hotel tax is up there so you'll need to take that into account as well. If you double your budget for the hotel, you are still out priced in Manhattan especially with having a car.

Thanks for your inputs.. Hotel price is not a problem.. I was trying to find if something available in that range in jersey city. however going thru different sites and commute from JC to NYC, booked hotel in times square. Now questions is drive from Chicago to NYC.. Where should we take halt to spend night. I am planning to cover 450-500 miles on day 1. Suggestions? Also places of interest between Chicago and NYC?

I am huge fan of Frank Lloyd Wright's work and have visited Falling Water in Mill Run PA as a mid point between here and NYC -- Fallingwater | Map & Driving Directions

I do this exact drive every year with two kids. They are now 6 and 4 but we've been doing it since they were 12 weeks old and 2. We've always done it without sleeping over somewhere. We stop every 2-3 hours so they can stretch/use the bathroom and then continue on our way. Even with all of those stops it only takes 15 hrs total so no need to sleep over anywhere. Portable DVD players and leapster game pads make this a possibility for us.
