It isn't work, it is being a competent adult with basic math skills.

Also, as has been previously mentioned, it involves making decisions that the server can't - i.e. splitting the costs on shared items like appetizers, bottles of wine, etc. I would never ask a server to split a check by items if I hadn't asked them to do separate bills at the beginning of the meal. If you are doing that, they have every right to think you're an idiot.

Well I almost never split shared items when I go out. IF it isn't work, and only requires competent math skills, then the server should be able to handle it. THey already have it easy enough in Chicago. They have the bus boys bring out the meals most of the time (at bars), and take the dirty dishes. All the waitress's do most of the time is take beer and burger/wing orders when I'm out with friends.

What if I'm not keeping track of how many beers I've been drinking or what types? They should be tipping me then.

Do you want the waiter/waitress to keep track of what everyone ordered and then provide checks to everyone separately?

I have never seen that anywhere in my life.

And if they took the time to do that people would whine because the service was slower. Some people today think servers are supposed to kiss their asses, you should see the self absorbed morons on Yelp who complain when servers don't put on an obsequious display.

Exactly. Yelp is the worst.

Amen. I rarely go on "Yelp", but the restaurant reviews are just pretentious beyond belief. The people giving these reviews should be forced to wait on people just like themselves...

If you can't keep track of how many beers you've had, then it's time for someone to drive you home.

If you have no idea of how much money you've spent on a single visit to a restaurant, then you should just stay home. You ordered the food/drinks--you should certainly know how much the bill is going to be..

You haven't been out much. A lot of waitresses I've had before do that.
