Lets get technical.

NHL teams with.. "ice" in the city:

Boston Bruins
New York Rangers
New York Islanders
New Jersey Devils
Philadelphia Flyers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
Toronto Maple Leafs
Buffalo Sabres
Columbus Blue Jackets
Detroit Red Wings
Chicago Blackhawks
Washington Capitals
Carolina Hurricanes
Minnesota Wild
Winnipeg Jets
St Louis Blues
Nashville Predators
Colorado Avalanche
Edomonton Oilers
Calgary Flames
Vancouver Canucks

That leaves..

San Jose Sharks
Los Angeles Kings
Anaheim Ducks
Phoenix Coyotes
Dallas Stars
Tampa Bay Lightning
Florida Panthers

without ice. Or lets just leave it at...... having "winter."

Teams were put in warmer areas to spread the footprint of not only the league, but grass roots level hockey in the community. There are tons and tons of draft picks now that come from warmer places (California hockey has I believe shot up 300%) and players are drafted from Texas, Florida, etc.

The Blackhawks went 49 years between Cups.

Wirtz cost the entire city a generation of hockey fans that are just now getting caught up.
There was a certain kind of synergy that Wirtz mastered in developing the families hugely successful liquor business and the way he ran the other businesses -- you have to realize that prior to HDTV hockey was a pitiful experience to televise! The challenge of very high speed action, that cannot have cameras very close to the surface for valid technical reasons, a difficult to track puck and the relatively unpredictable nature of pauses in gameplay all contributed to lack of TV viewers. Running The Chicago Stadium & United Center PROFITABLY and without ANY GOVERNMENT funds for renovation were / are HUGE accomplishments.

For "his time" Bill Wirtz was a pretty savvy leader.

The fan base has always included an "interesting" mix of people with the financial means to afford season tickets, even in the highest levels the view of the action is excellent. Some folks really enjoy the scuffles that come from the physical nature of the game. TV coverage rather often misses the conflicts that are happening at the corners...

The Blackhawks have long supported youth hockey and the Chicago region has good success sending kids to college / minor league programs, especially considering how costly ice time is here compared to places like Canada or Sweden where the rinks are often government subsidized. There is no shortage of hockey fans in the "young generation" and a trip to any place with grade school / high school kids and you will encounter a sea of Toews / Kane / Sharp / Keith / Crawford jerseys. The core of this team is very much admired by young people and should be for a very long time...

it's true - hockey on SD was bad, but people still televised it. I remember watching every single North Stars game on "local" TV before they moved to Dallas. You get used to it anyway...

Canadian teams should win the majority of the Stanley Cups with the Op's logic. Im not sure if they do though.

Lately the balance has been tilted toward the expansion teams. The expansion draft had much to do with that, and the league bias toward expansion...

If you read the Wikipedia article about the "Original 6", it sounds like it was harder for any non-Canadian team to win for several decades, but this changed in the 1970s when they changed the rules to remove geographic restrictions on player recruitment.

The OP doesn't know what he's talking about at all. I'm not even going to bother to add anymore that I already have because it's not worth any more of my time. Absolutely pathetic and ignorant.

Uninformed poster! The fan base is not to be underestimated nor discounted. Professional as well as amateur hockey has a huge fan base from around the world.
