You always seem to magically know someone who supports your argument, the "qualifier". You mention the opposing viewpoint to them, they get back to you, tell you what you want to hear, you bring it to the forum. Has to get old. You have to keep in mind, lots of pandering goes on by newcomers, people can sometimes be afraid to offend established residents.

End of the day, Chicago is a city that caters to the midwestern mentality (beer and football rules all), even if a few neighborhoods don't follow this parallel. I'm sorry if that upsets some people.
You act as if another region is superior in someway. How is a midwest culture any better or worse than anywhere else in the U.S.? A lot of people on CD make it seem like one region is supposed to be superior than the other because of money, fame, and glamour. I just never got that. Isn't every region supposed to be good and bad in it's own way?

What we need is more people with their pants tucked into their boots.

Not true at all. They're here quite a bit because of Kanye's trips and their business deals with Sears. A friend of mine had to do some PR work for some sales things they did and could only get minor coverage of an appearance at a mall. They did some things at clubs that were very poorly attended. People in Chicago have enough sense to not be interested in the Kardashians (or their line of clothing at Sears for that matter).

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to jonnynonos again.

Hahahaha...thanks!

I do like the idea that the entire city should look like a trashy Prague nightclub before we can consider ourselves cosmopolitan. There is something very Sprockets-esque about it.

Actually Ronnie, no. The point is that your viewpoints are old, and outdated of a particular area. You're basically applying logic you used in the 90s (Club XL anyone?) to what you see now coupled with visiting every once in awhile only a few parts of the city that are in no way indicative of the city itself. You are also, it seems, too easily swayed by what you see without applying much logic to it. For example, thinking that the average person cares about celebrities because you saw a handful of people on an internet forum made a big deal about where Rosie O'Donnell was going to live.

And if you knew how to comprehend what my friend said, you'd realize that he did partially agree with you. He agreed with both of us. And the reason I had an answer right away is because this is something I'm directly interested in - and so are some of my friends. I mentioned it to him in passing as we were grabbing a bite to eat last night because I wanted to hear his thoughts considering he is new to the city and is interested in fashion too.

I'm sorry if I have a wide variety of friends interested in a lot of different things. Afterall, people in the midwest aren't interested in "interesting" things. Oh wait.

I KNOW Chicago pretty well and it's got it's issues but it's still a great major city.

And here we have a 20ish page thread because of a mugging.

For those of you that haven't been there, problems in the tourist areas are fairly rare. The murder rate in the gold coast area where that occurred is comparable to say.....Japan. Chicago keeps their gang murders tucked away in bad neighborhoods via selective policing and housing policies.
Hi Mathguy - I agree with the part about the murders being low in the Gold Coast...most of the shootings etc seem to be relegated to the South and West sides of town, where tourists typically do not travel to.

However, the purpose of the thread was not to highlight one mugging; it was to highlight an ongoing trend of increased muggings on the Mag Mile. This one mugging was just one example of this disturbing trend. If I have an "agenda" with my posts, its to focus on getting the city to start hiring more police and bring back the policing tactics that worked well enough for the city, that allowed shootings and crime to fall big time since the 90's. In order for the city to stay awesome, the same overall level of safety that was around in areas like the Mag Mile, Gold Coast, and Lakeview, need to return. The past couple of years, we have seen that overall safety level drop. If it keeps dropping, then people will stop visiting and people will start to move away. To me, this is common sense...protect the areas that help make the city awesome, while hiring more police to patrol the areas that are not-so-safe, to help make them awesome too.

I live right by the Mag Mile in the River North area. I eat in this area during lunch and evening hours. I also go out to drink. I have never seen anyone get mugged. I've seen plenty of police presence too. So either I keep missing it, or it something that rarely happens. Either way, it's not enough to say it's a "trend". For someone that lives in the area, don't you find it odd that I wouldn't have at least witnessed it once if it was a trend? Nobody that I know, none of my neighbors or friends have even acknowledged seeing anything about this either.

Ditto. When you really think about it...the chances of you being mugged or seeing one is pretty slim. Even if there's 200 muggings per year on that stretch, you're talking about 525,949 minutes. That's basically a mugging every 2625 minutes, which is one every 1.82 days. Multiply that by the total area (sq meters, miles, etc...possibly volume since there's areas with an upper and lower side of Michigan ave) and yeah...hard to be there at the 'right time."
