Im thinking about a move to chicago next summer once my lease here in md is up.

Does anyone on this board work in financial services? How is the job market there?

Trying to decide if I want to take a chance and move without a job... anyone done anything similar?

Financial services? Chicago is basically 2nd to it behind NYC in the US, but I can't tell you 100% how the market is, but pretty sure people are hiring...

perhaps this is obvious, but if you move without a job lined up, be sure to have ample savings. otherwise, it can get real hard fast. I've moved while unemployed before and it's quite stressful without a decent savings.

Depends on how many hours a week you're working, how much debt you have (if any), if you'll have a car, where you plan to live, etc.

If you don't have much debt and live in an area and have a job in an area where you don't need a car, and you start working recently after your move, then, let's see:

If you work 40 hours a week, you'll probably be taking in over $1000/month after taxes (probably closer to say $1200 at least). If you find a place that's $550/month in rent with roommates (or less), get an unlimited CTA pass at $100/month, and pay $50/month for a cell phone, then that leaves you with probably $300-$500/month (maybe more) after rent and transportation. Then you know, all the food stuff and what not..

It can be done of course, probably, if you know your rent limits and how to budget for food and stuff. Obviously it's not perfect, but of course it can be done. It's a good thing to move anywhere with savings, even if you have a real nice job lined up.

If you're working full time, then yeah it's probably possible as long as you find a place (a roommate or two may be key here) that's not too expensive. I'd try and keep it at $600/month or less.

I am going to try to line a job up before, but from my experience many recruiters dont pay as much attention to applicants who would need to relocate.

I guess ill play it by ear

My company has offices in chicago so I might try to get a transfer if I cant find a new position at a new company

It depends on the company...when we hire, we don't even care where they're from. I mean really when we've considered candidates, that point or question has never even come up. Yeah some of the smaller or less profitable companies may care, but it's not like all of them are like that. Many, if you are good enough, will take you, but sure some will care more that you aren't in Chicago.
