It's fine.

People over exaggerate.

Nah. Some of us just don't care to live in a miasma of poverty, drugs, mental illness, and gang-banging barely disguised by a paper-thin veneer of nightlife and yuppiehood. If that's your bag, go for it. Just be aware of what you're surrounding yourself with.

actually, I think it's quite accurate to say that's one of the worst pockets on all the northside. There might be a few areas in Rogers Park to try and contend for that distinction, but that particular pocket of Uptown is it's own special crud hole.

It's less than a mile radius.
You will always have other people to dilute it.
Unlike real dangerous places worth worrying about

Sure there are more dangerous places to worry about; there are also much safer places too, many of which are merely blocks away. This particular area is just not good; it has tension and mentally ill strolling out; it has repropbates and dead-eyed thugs walking and hanging; it's in updownupdate or the tribune/sun times or reddit or this site for the wrong reasons too often; it's one of the only north side spots where shootings are common.

Life is hard enough without dealing with all that crap. OP, look elsewhere.

The area should be better in a year or two after some of the large renovations are completed (Lawrence House most notably) but it's still the worst part of the neighborhood and I'd look elsewhere for a rental. If you want to stay in the area, I'd suggest Kenmore/Winthrop north of Argyle and south of Bryn Mawr....it's more convenient to Andersonville, has better express bus service, much less riff raff and it's still affordable. But in the end, if looking at poor people doesn't bother you, go for the Sheridan place.

That part of Uptown ain't exactly Englewood... but I still wouldn't consider it even close to "safe"

Watch out for the thugs hanging out at the Starbucks, the sushi place, and the cocktail bars. Scary stuff. The Green Mill brings in some pretty rough middle class senior citizen suburbanites to listen to jazz, too.

The most dangerous thing I've encountered in that area is the acoustics at the Aragon, which will kill your ears.

Exactly -- the thin veneer of nightlife and yuppiehood I was referring to.

If you believe these are the defining features of the immediate area when choosing a place to live, do so at your own risk. For most rational people, a Starbuck's and a sushi place aren't sufficient to disguise what a messed up place the Uptown core is.
