A really good ol' stout Chicago winter with thick ice, sub-zero wind chills, blowing snow, and a few days of sunshine is a bit like living in a commercial deep freeze that is opened for a few minutes one a week - minus the white-outs, the black ice, the downed power lines, and the old furnace that quits at 3am on the coldest day of the century.

Otherwise Chicago weather is, well, Chicago weather.

Say what you will about this hellish valley I currently live in, but in December and January I'll have my house opened up to the balmy weather.

Maybe you can do that in Michigan, and maybe you can do it in Chicago on occasion, but I wouldn't bet any money on it. Some winters are frigid and dreary and some are not as cold and overcast. .

More often than not, our winters are not that bad. Expect several days every winter where high temps will struggle to get out of the single digits, but its mainly in the 30s all winter. Id rather have the cold and snow in winter than have to deal with tornadoes and ice storms, screw that. Give me gentle snowfall over crushing ice storms that devastate most of those "milder winter climate" states. Give me our climate over places like ID, MN, MT, WY, ND, SD, CO, etc, that have already had blizzards (some a few weeks ago) and are experiencing nighttime lows below 0 degrees.

Its not so bad here.

Honey it's a nightmare there. Chicago has a very, very long and brutal winter.

Average temps in the 30s, only 3 months with consistent snow, and average of 36" of snowfall is hardly what I call "very, very long and brutal".

I suggest you toughen up and visit Fargo, International Falls, or if you want to go absolutely crazy, Barrow, AK if you want "very, very long and brutal" winters. Chicago's winters are indeed cold, but your choice of words is laughable, unless youre a native Key Wester.

It is true that last year, Chicago had a relatively mild winter. From the looks of it, only January was bad.

You can thank global warming, I suppose.

We had more snow than average and set record cold temps all over the place. The year before we nearly doubled our average snowfall levels and also were below normal for temps. Then to top it all off, we had one of the coldest summers on record.

Global "warming"? Greatest hoax of all time.

Default does Chicago's weather and gray landscape ever affect your mood?

This cold weather and gray landscape is actually pretty depressing. The ghetto/violence add up. Anyone else feel the same way?
