From what I've heard, the set free day a week has been phased out as it was being exploited by tourism agencies. They would put together a week's package where a well-heeled group of international visitors would end up never paying a dime to these non-profits, while the for-profit tourism agencies were making a mint.

That old line applies about how one bad apple can spoil a barrel, it seems...

^^^That's too bad. Each museum at one time had a free day every week year round. This would have hurt many
families with limited incomes and school field trips (unless they make accommodations for students & teachers).

Pretty sure Chicago school kids get into at least some of the Museums for free. I remember the days of MSI being free year round!

Geez, when was that? I can't remember when they started charging a fee ( we did go there a lot when
we were kids in the 60's and I do remember my dad having to pay for the coal mine).

General admission was still free in the late 80s, I remember going my senior year of high school and being totally amazed I could walk right in. OTOH, the exhibits were totally beat up with a lot of broken interactives.

All they asked was what's my zip code. You should be ok.
