I'm thinking of moving from Portland to Chicago for a change and I noticed the cost of living is about the same in both cities. However I also realize that Chicago's low income dangerous neighborhoods probably bring down this average quite a bit.

If I don't want to live in a place where being robbed or murdered is a significant thing to worry about, is Chicago still affordable?

Give us an idea of what you actually mean by "affordable" for a studio and 1 bedroom...everyone has a different benchmark. Not all cheaper areas are dangerous, but again it depends on what you consider affordable and not.

An approximate rental/purchase budget would help.

The trouble with affordable is the definition. $600-$800 a month could be a rough area or sharing an aparment in a very nice area. How much do you want to pay for rent and what do you want in an apartment or area.

Not if you want a studio. You can find studios in some decent areas for that range. Hell, there's even a few buildings in the Gold Coast, or right outside of it that are barely above $800/month for a studio. I know because a friend of mine was paying $775/month for his on Maple & LaSalle, though they increased it to like $815/month. There are definitely studios available in that range in both Lincoln Park and Lakeview too. I have a friend near Deming & Clark paying like $650/month for her studio.
