My husband and I are considering moving to Evanston. He is unable to take public transportation. What is the best route to commute to the loop and what is the average commute time?

If you're unable to take public trans, then I suppose a car would be the best way. Commute time will depend on when you leave home and work.

I would allot 45 minutes to an hour to drive from Evanston to the loop. The best route is probably Lake Shore Drive. It's far from ideal, though as there are a ton of lights and usually a traffic jam around Hollywood, if I remember correctly.

Thanks Nikita. That is the route I was thinking of. His commute times would be mostly during the rush.

Can also take a bicycle for 6-10 months of the year, depending on his degree of heartiness. Would probably take between 90 and 120 minutes each way, depending on his speed and exact route and where in Evanston he was coming from.

Also could take a boat during the summer if you had docks at both ends. I'm less sure how long that would take, but I'd estimate that with a reasonably-powered boat it might take somewhere around 60 minutes home-to-desk assuming top speed of 30 knots or so and proximity to office and home of the docks.

Don't be ridiculous, taking a helicopter would cut your commute in half.

Yeah, but how many homes come with a helicopter pad?

Just curious, why is he unable to take public transportation? You have 3 commuter rail stops in Evanston, plus 7 *el* stops. If he takes the purple line, it is probably less crowded starting from Evanston, so he would likely get a seat, especially from the stops further north than Davis St.

I'm with Nana here. Is he claustrophobic or something like that? The Metra North Line usually has plenty of seats.

Great question, why is he unable to take PT?
