I am a full time grad student living in Chicago. Just got a car recently. My license plates are from another state since my parents own the car. Bought a city sticker today because I think I have to buy one regardless of where the car is registered. Went to a currency exchange to purchase it. Noticed on my receipt, it says my license plates are from IL not from the state it is actually from. Will this be a problem?

Also, I think I dont need to change my plates because I'm a student, not an IL resident, and dont own the car. Is this correct?

Thanks

I think you'll be OK with the plates being out of state, but I'd get the city sticker info fixed to correspond to the correct state plates. Nothing the city of Chicago likes better than to collect revenue.

If I were you, I'd also contact the insurance company covering the automobile and make certain they will cover you for any accidents in Illinois while you are here.

Good to hear. I hope the ticketers dont see the chicago parking sticker and out of state plates and give me a ticket for not having IL plates.

Insurance comp already knows. Made sure of that before I got the car shipped from home

I moved here for school, but permanently last year. I let my insurance company now about move to IL. Previous state found out. Got letter in mail from previous state stating if I didn't switch over plates, my license would be suspended.

While I'm not saying this will happen to you, I'm just sharing what happened to me. A few days later, I was at Secretary of State switching everything over & dropping $350+
