...aspiring teachers looking to move to Chicago, take note.

I wonder how much better the suburbs are, especially when the tenured teachers stay forever...

I have comments in another thread aimed at a prospective "new college grad" but the take away should be the fact that CPS REMAINS one of the least well run districts. Chaos reigns. The reason for the 550 teachers being laid off (along with far more aids and "security personnel") is these schools have performed so poorly for so long they are being "reconstituted". CPS Announces layoff of 1,100 | Chicago Tribune

The worst part of this is almost all the teachers will end up teaching at another CPS school. If they are terrible they will likely continue to do a lousy job at their new school. If they were great odds are they left those failing schools long ago...

According to Barbara Byrd Bennett, the 550 teachers are "impacted teachers" due to declining enrollment and not layoffs. The 1150 losses are in addition to the losses of staff at the three reconstituted schools.

If this was European or South American city, like cities that have balls, the teachers and supporters would be rioting in the streets right now. It's unbelievable how these teachers just let the city have them bend over and make them "take it", while people who care about this stuff in London would be rioting.

Folks most effected by this in Chicago are perfectly happy to be watching another episode of the Jerry Springer Show or Maury / Who My Baby Dadddy to protest anything that has dramatic consequences like inferior education or rampant violence...

Well, in your view, none of these people would be able to make it in the private sector where 'at will' employment means you can be fired or retained for little or no reason.

Welcome to the real world. Time to put your big boy pants on.

I wonder if something else is at play. It could be the old "you're welcome to reapply for new positions" line that's give to many laid-off workers, with the tacit understanding that they WON'T get a CPS job back...
