I've walked on the beaches all year round. As long as you are not swimming, you will be fine.

They aren't that strict about not swimming after labor day either, at least not in my experience. You can actually wade more than waste deep without a 19 year old on a rowboat screaming at you!

And, even though it's a relative term this year , Lake Michigan water is usually at peak temperature in early September . it takes a while to 'warm' up, and a while to cool off in Autumn ..

...that literally do not care at all what happens on the beaches any time o the years unless there is a literal riot brewing. At the other extreme I have seen cops respond to some higher up over react to a drowning or something by subsequently harassing tri-athletes in training that can obviously fend for themselves.

Early September often sees pretty high average water temps on the Illinois side of the beach and it is, as others mentioned, a time when the summer life guards are back in school and thus an excellent opportunty to utilize the lake with minimal hassles.

Agreed! ...but October and maybe June follow close behind!

Yes I agree with that. October and June are nice too. It does not get to be gloomy and really cooler until after Halloween.

I'm originally from FL, so 60's below is cold to me I guess I might need a small fleece for the nights?

Maybe - the historical lows in early September are in the low 60s. It's not until about the middle of the month where it on average dips below 60 for a low. This summer has been cooler than normal though so I wouldn't be surprised if the lows are in the upper 50s earlier.
