Can anyone recommend a drinking establishment in Roscoe Village or North Center that is not pub or sports bar themed?

Tiny Lounge. Very good cocktails with an attractive crowd.

I second the Tiny Lounge. Great atmosphere.
Also, Half Acre tasting room is good for beer lovers.

Half Acre rocks. Bad Apple will show games behind the bar, but I wouldn't call it a sports bar. And don't forget Resi's Bierstube on Irving!

What exactly distinguishes a "pub" from a "bar?"

IMO Laschet's > Resi's

It's nice. Like I said, good cocktails, nice looking crowd. Food is actually pretty good too.

I guess the pub/bar distinction is less important than sports bar vs. non sports bar. Lincoln Ave seems to be crawling with sports-themed bars. That's fine with me but I like exploring different ambiances.

If anyone made it to Endgrain before it closed, it was a cool place.

One more question, do you guys know if Tiny Lounge is quiet or loud on weekend nights? Usually when I'm in a sports bar in a weekend I have trouble hearing people unless they're yelling into my ear.

I haven't done an exhaustive survey of the bar scene in North Center/Lincoln Square... but of those I've been in suggests even the "sports bar" scene there is nothing like the "stuff 'em in and feed 'em cheap beer until they brawl and/or puke" douche-rodeo found in other nightlife areas patronized primarily by 20-somethings. It's just a much calmer, more grown-up scene up there. You'll never see Lincoln Avenue lined with CPD just to keep the peace like you see in Wrigleyville. You'll be lucky to see more than one squad car parked up there, because that's all that's needed.
