I don't hear Chicagoland news much since I don't live in your city, but I'm wondering if there's talk of expanding Midway's footprint? I realize that would mean tearing down established neighborhoods, etc.

It can't be pleasant for the residents being under the flight path of the existing runways (noise, etc.) Southwest would probably jump at the idea of additional capacity there. Comments?

If you look at a map you will see that the airport is hemmed in on all sides by very established structures, but biggest obstacles would be the kinds of people that live near by / own property -- this are folks represented by the most powerful politicians in the state!

There was this Tribune article over the summer about an expansion of Midway. It is only tentative AND a sort of long ways off, and I am not sure it will increase the actual footprint that much.

thanks for the Tribune article link, gemini; No mention of expanding the airport's footprint- probably impossible on many levels.

Not only does Southwest dominate Midway, but that airport is also its biggest hub.

I'm sure there are people who live near Midway who are grateful for it, because it suppresses property values and allows them to buy a home with more bedrooms/bathrooms/etc. than they could otherwise afford if they weren't in a flight path. Of course, you'll never hear them say this.

Wow, that opens a can of worms. Are you referring to the South Suburban Airport? Millions have already been spent buying land for it, and millions more to patrol it. Or Milwaukee Mitchell? It already has flights and a few Amtrak trains from Chicago stop there. I heard one airline encourages its use with a flight to LA that stops at both but gives a huge discount for flying out of Mitchell.
