I'm living in Columbus, OH and plan on moving back to Chicago(my hometown). WOW. I got sticker shock at rent prices. I pay $700 for a one bedroom apartment in a nice area in Columbus.
In Chicago I can expect to pay $1300 for a decent one bedroom apt. in a nice area.

It is almost double rent costs and my wages stay the same.

What is the next closest town to East Chicago living in Indiana? Munster, IN?
I want affordable rent but still living close to Chicago to appear as if I am living there.

Thanks.

Nice. Love the Chicago charm.

We really do like Oak Park for all the local amenities and we're close to the blue line (or green line, depending on where you live). But 1,300 would be an "okay" place even around here.

What does Chicago have that you want now? The city and state are in financial turmoil and you would possibly be better off in a neighboring city/state within driving distance. Indy, St Louis, Milwaukee, Madison come to mind.

You can get a 1 bedroom for under $1000 in Jefferson Park.

You can still get 1 bedrooms in town for under $1300/month easily. I could find you a studio in the heart of Lakeview for under $900/mo right now even, and some one bedrooms for not that much more.

Well, I'm impressed for one, especially in those neighborhoods. You can't do that in Boston..

Hey. You get what you pay for. There are also better job opportunities and things to do in Chicago. You will likely get recruiters contacting you more often for better jobs depending on your industry. You also don't need a car.

Look into Oakland area, also Woodlawn and Southshore; I believe Obama lived around Woodlawn?

Some people seem to have odd ideas of what a nice neighborhood is. When I left Chicago a couple of years ago I was paying $1375 a month for a <large> 2 bedroom with a rear den and use of the garage in Lincoln Square, by Argyle and California.
