On craigslist I saw this really nice apartment for rent. It was located right above a pizza restaurant. What makes me nervous is, what if it is a fire in the pizza restaurant? Or what if there is no fire, but would I have to worry about roaches, rats, fumes?

Maybe a crazy question. Do you guys have any experience with living above a restaurant.

I'd really like to make this a best pizza thread, may I?.

All kidding aside, we've had apts. above a BBQ pit for years w/o any incident. Code enforcement checks those establishments regularly out here.

No way.. Bugs plus fires are a danger to living above a restaurant.

I wouldn't live above a grocery or restaurant just due to the pest issues alone. There are lots of apartments in Chicago, it shouldn't be necessary to compromise too much unless you have an extremely tight budget.

Is it an older building (i.e. built more than 40 years ago)? If so, asbestos was likely used to insulate the floors, so chances of the apartment being completely engulfed in flames from a restaurant fire below are small. Even in newer buildings, codes and regulations have become much stricter over the years to outweigh the very few benefits of asbestos insulation.

I wouldn't do it. I lived above a restaurant in NYC. I actually didn't have problem with pests or smells. The big issue was noise.

In addition to just regular noise, the clean up crew blasted heavy metal and banged pots and pans from 3am-4:30am.

I had to break my lease and lost my security deposit... I just couldn't get any sleep.

Reminds me of when I was in my 20's I lived above a Glass/Mirror shop. I was doing some partying at that stage and listening to glass and mirrors being cut early Saturday mornings was enough for me. That saw...
