This.

We are perhaps going a little far in this hypothetical That said though, if the OP stayed in TX to earn a graduate degree, attending Texas A&M would be light years cheaper @ $8K/semester. Just more gas for the bonfire...

So, maybe find a pharmacy job, get/become a roommate to keep rent low initially and have some kind of acquaintance in the city, establish Illinois state residency, spend sufficient time to study and apply for a UIC pharmacology degree, keep trying and working that job until acceptance into the program, potentially go into graduate housing, complete degree, get a well-paying, pay debts, profit?

He doesn't have to go very far to study. The University of Houston has a reputable pharmacy school and is near the Texas Medical Center with a few medical and nursing schools nestled in between the hospitals. Since it is in the same state, he can pay resident tuition & fees and then move to Chicago or stay in Houston after graduation.
