I had an interview today at University of Chicago Medical Center. I have never been to Hydepark before but I heard it's suppose to be pretty nice...and safe.
Well, is University of Chicago Medical Center in, actual Hydepark? The impression I got as soon as I left campus was not very good. We have one car between us now, my husband and I; but we will potentially buy another one.
However, I might have to take public transit late at night at first. From what I could tell at about 11:30 am, I don't even know if I would want to take public transit even then. Anybody who lives or work in the area, your suggestions are appreciated.

U of C Medical is definitely in Hyde Park, though on the (western) edge of the neighborhood, which is Cottage Grove. Walk any further west through Washington Park, or south through the Midway and the neighborhoods gets dicey. Walk east and north and it is Hyde Park and prime U of C territory, which is generally safe and well-maintained.

Walking from the el stops further west would not be recommended, certainly not late at night. But U of C might have a shuttle service between the el (55th/Garfield? 51st?) and the hospital.

I just looked it up. They do have s shuttle to the green line I guess. So that's good. I was planning on walking from the El station on nice days but I've changed my mind. But, I used to go to school at Truman College in Uptown. Right around there is not too hot either and I was never nervous walking around there..lol

Have you tried taking the electric rail from The Loop? It's a little more expensive, but it's a short and comfortable ride and the walk from the train stop to the university area is extremely safe (at least during the day). I've been advised against walking from the El station.

Check to see what shuttles there are from the medical center. It is safe in the area but if you have doubts, you are not ready to ride public transit from Hyde Park late at tnight.

I do know there is a shuttle to the U of C during the week at rush hour because my friend takes it. She works at the medical center. You can take it from various points downtown and then it goes straight to the U of C. I think it looks like a normal CTA bus.

Yes..I read that they have a shuttle so that's good. One of the shuttles goes from Ogivie . It's only a few stops but it takes a good 35 -39 minutes according to google maps.

As others have said, the medical center is on the fringe of the neighborhood. Most of Hyde Park is much nicer. Even still, the area is fairly safe.

Mod cut.

I'm going to take transits for sure when I'm not driving. But at night, 11 pm, I will be driving.

Hmmm. Truman College is in a small blighted area of a basically decent neighborhood, Uptown. The areas south and west of Hyde Park are some of the worst ghettoes in the country. No comparison.

If you commute from the U of C medical center to places south and/or west you *will* need a car.
