It's still a good idea to have rapid transit in Woodlawn now especially as UC keeps expanding.

I think what I'd like to see is:

- Metra Electric (and all of Metra) turned into more a regional express rail / s-bahn kind of express rapid transit network
- The Green Line re-expanded eastwards to the Metra 63rd street station like originally planned with a large transfer station between Metra Electric and the Green Line
- The Green Line only serving that Jackson Park branch
- Parts of the former Ashland branch of the Green Line becoming an extension of the Orange Line that goes from Midway Airport under 63rd street to then connect to the new Green Line over the Dan Ryan also terminating at the joint Metra/CTA station
it could easiest and cheapest solution would be if the electric metra line was converted to the CTA instead. then you got instant rapid transit southeast from downtown to hegwsich.

btw, I'm all for expanding any of our public transportation.

Look at China, they have more skyscrapers than the U.S. does by far. How did they do that? By becoming a manufacturing giant. I remember Continental Can, American Can, Rheem Water Heaters, Hawthorne Works, Nabisco, Kool Aid, and many, many others located on the south side of Chicago that provided jobs for its residents. Today? Gone. And it's largely the fault of the American public, who believed in the "Global Economy" and would rush to buy junk "Made in China", "Made in Mexico", and "Made in Indonesia". Maybe it was inevitable. But we have less money available today, because we exported the jobs. I don't see it getting better in the future for Chicago when the best our politicians can think of, is a casino.
A casino, that so far no one will finance construction of, and legal weed are the remedies for fixing the $$ issue. Express approval on legal weed at that.

Yea, I think that’s part of it, but moreover all of Metra being converted to electrified rapid transit that doesn’t just terminate in downtown, but runs through downtown is the best solution. Look up Crossrail Chicago—that is a fantastic plan. Chicago as an older metropolis has a massive and underutilized rail network that can be quickly converted to speedy mass transit.

Legal weed for various reasons aside from just raising funds. I reckon making a better pipeline to jobs for area colleges would also help. The port could also use some fixing and reform as it’s key to making any Chicago exports more competitive. A stronger media industry would also help.

Well I'm old enough to definitely agree. But it was Corporate America that did the moving. Chicago was merely in the same bat with the North in general. But at least the politicians did what it took to keep them in the core and moving back especially.

Hard to believe sometimes Chicago got its first 3-supertalls. While the city was experiencing core AND neighborhood declines lie White-Flight and in other ways like retail and XXX things in the Loop.

I arrived in Chicago in 77'. I knew the declines. But yet also what it could be again. Well ...... Chicago's Core today did attain it. Yes plenty of city and state issues. But still. The EMERALD CITY CORE SHINES.

My first job was at Radio steel Grand Ave. Just Radio Flyer now. Its old manufacturing facility is its Corporate headquarters today and museum of its history. Its manufacturing is in China. No surprise in solo many made this move. Chicago s far from unique in it.

As far as getting better? Chicago still has its:
- prestige,
- awesome street-grid
- lakefront of harbors and beaches, few cities can boast in even its Core.
- good solid housing stock to invigorate
- much land and lots that housing too far gone was cleared South and West side .... to gain new infill IN THE FUTURE.

* The city isn't going to fall off the map. So many issues other states and their cities share too also. Much depends on the economy and Corporate America looking more Northward again ..... WILL HAPPEN.

I believe (even if I don't see it) that the Midwest will be a booming region in the future. Chicago included. Sunbelt fast migrating to cities, that Corporate America also steers Northerners to. Are gaining on issues, pension depth ad infrastructure cost. Property taxes can be extreme too. Yes some have no state income tax. But gotta get it from somewhere.

Your new city of Philly in our state. Also had Big plans that never transpired. You CHOSE to LEAVE Chicago. Philly is your home now.

Chicago did far more in improvements it .... overspent on. Then Philly ever did by its Machine Corrupt Politics. Chicago looks darn good. The Core screams grandiose, clean and not afraid to do benches even. Its tourist attractions it built have paid off in a much better city Core.

Philly, with its Machine politics .... did do much much less better. It relied on its Colonial heritage for tourism. It is great it has it. But still not a huge tourism draw to get the increases Chicago's got.

Philly has a casino.... Like Sugarhouse in the Fishtown neighborhood. Why not talk about that? Ollies Powerhouse poker club at Penn Center. Not a casino but still.

So bring in Philly's superiority in building more transit and its casino scene. It has a few in the suburbs too. Including the NJ side.

You lessen Chicago you left. But say NOTHING of your superior choice in Philly.

One day I hope to read about it? Other then your crime comments in the Philly forum and the CORRUPT politician ones there too .....
Like this one in the Philly crime forum.

Where was Mayor Kenney on Wednesday night? Took him quite a while to surface and finally showed up in casual attire...rumor has it we have a ''party mayor'' perhaps...lol.

Must have been down the shore partying with family....

It really stinks that neither of those great ideas are likely to happen in our lifetime because Chicago is so deep in the hole . Not to mention the political polarized climate in DC is not going to approve the level of funding required to assist. Ugh.
