You could always just take the 151 Sheridan bus. That should be pretty quiet and safe at that hour. It runs 24 hours a day.

Where are you living in LP or Lakeview though? The sheridan bus kinda hugs the lake, so it would only work well if you were living right near the lakeshore/east of Halsted.

Yeah that line stops right outside my front door. There's so many 151 buses I can't believe it.

The real question here is...how can you afford an apartment in Lincoln Park by working at The Cheesecake Factory??

Roommate? Savings? Parental help? None of your business?

Despite the common assertion that EVERY apartment in Lincoln Park is a $2000 condo, I know many people who live there who have found deals, live in inexpensive studios or one-bedrooms that haven't been rennovated, have a 'friend of a friend whose grandmother owns a building' etc.

Browsing craigslist recently, it seemed to me that Lincoln Park has a number of small studios. I haven't noticed this in other neighborhoods... are small studios (under 400sq ft) common in Chicago?

Not really -- they're really only "common" along the lakeshore and particularly the northern portion of it. And even then 400sqft seems pretty small.

well, the OP is coming from Boston, where on average, the typical 1 bedroom costs about $1K (and more than that in neighborhoods comparable to Lincoln Park), not including parking if the OP had to pay for it. chances are, if she could survive in Boston solo and with a car, she can easily afford LP

I'm planning to find a job in Chicago after I graduate from college. If everything happened in the way I planned, I would be working in the Children's Memorial Hospital, and very possibly working at night. As what you said, the big issue will be walking to the station at night. I don't know much that area and it may be dangerous for me to walk at night, since I'm of Asian descent and I'm not a big old guy. Here in Indianapolis I can walk at night, because it's my home and I know where's the bad area. But I totally don't know anything about Chicago.
