Who cares, Wilmette is a suburb. You're very hung up on people with high incomes.

Did you miss the part where the OP is a young artist looking for an art scene and cheap rent? Steering him away from the most expensive and yuppie-est places in the city isn't being "hung up," it's giving realistic advice, which is what one would reasonably assume he is seeking, no? Mod cut.

You called Lincoln Park and Wicker Park suburban. That is a completely ridiculous statement. I don't think anyone suggested WP or LP to the OP. People are reacting to a statement that they lack character and are suburban. Neither of which are true.

Demographically speaking, yes. They are rich, white, overpriced, generic. Not hip and artsy and affordable like the OP is looking for.

Actually from the very first page someone (who seemed almost as irrationally defensive about it as you) questioned why the OP thought WP lacked character and didn't want to live there. Those of us who know and understand why responded accordingly.

Back to topic, I would love to see people like this moving into some of our more challenged neighborhoods. How about Little Village or East Garfield Park? The former is definitely getting more white young hipsy types. I'm seeing them more and more each day. I'm scared of the latter but maybe he's got a stronger stomach than I.

Garfield Park has very limited commercial activity and has far too much crime. Sometimes the green line can be a nightmare too. All it really has going for it are some well priced grey stones and proximity to the city. Little Village is light years ahead in terms of livability and viability, and the pink line is significantly less problematic.

Proximity to “the city”? What’s this, creeping New Yorkism or Londonism? The city.

Good grief, pull out a map. There’s no hidden message there. It’s east of Oak Park for Pete’s sake.

I don’t need a map to know Garfield Park is in the city, not in proximity to it. Hell, I was baptized at Lady of Sorrows. I assume TB was referring to downtown as “the city”.

If I misunderstood that I will stand corrected.

You are legit- I got it.

But who cares if he referred to downtown/Chicago's core as 'the city'.
