I don't see what the big deal is, to be honest. Dress warmly and keep your heat on...

Not too much. Go grocery shopping and stock up on groceries and prescriptions from Walgreens, or CVS. I like to have the car on a full tank of gas, it is much less likely to freeze if you have a full tank,

Schools here just announced none for 2 days, and no heated garage here; so

-Filled gas tank
-Switched to full synthetic oil, of which molecular structure can handle temp extremes better.
-Am removing car battery to store indoors.
-Inside home, opened kitchen cabinet door so plumbing gets heat under sink.

I wonder how the folks that live further North survive these temperatures every year ? Do not believe that a -50 wind chill is anywhere near what -50 air temperature feels like. The hype that these local weather people are pushing is ridiculous.

I grew up in the U.P. of Michigan and saw the thermometer go down to -56 once and -40 was common. We still went to school, sat there with our jackets and gloves on but still went.

Here's a sample of the weather in that area. Stambaugh is 10 miles from where I lived. Note that this was April of last year.

By the way, there was no panic among the residents.
I'm not saying that this cold weather isn't dangerous, just not a fatal as local news would have you believe.

You never know what to expect. Lots of people will have frozen pipes and car troubles. I really don't do anything unusual, just make sure everything is sealed up well. Feel bad for the animals, how do deer, livestock, coyotes, etc. manage when it's this cold?

Who remembers those insanely brutal cold spells we (Chicagoland) had in the early 80s? I think the actual temp hit -25 one year; people's fuel lines froze (cars), etc. Just awful.

And we old timers recall the horrible winter of 1979, beginning in Jan. Streets not adequately plowed. Poor Bilandic got blamed (rightly or wrongly, I don't know.)

Additionally, for you gardeners, you'll probably lose most of your marginally-hardy plants to the cold.
