In Chicago, I have heard SoFo (the part of Andersonville that is south of Foster Avenue; there was even a bar named after it, not sure if it's still there) and SoNo (south of North Avenue). One Chicago guidebook I once read even referred to SuHu (Superior and Huron Streets, which don't cross but are parallel and adjacent to each other).

andrew61, those are new ones to me! Thank you for sharing. I'll have to look into that. I guess enough city dwellers allowed for these names, given that they exist! Maybe some like them, others do not. Thank you for educating me. I don't recall ever reading about this nor hearing those names, in my many travels. Have a great day!- Master Jay in Milwaukee

I think I've heard people from that nabe calling it that

Ri-No is ripe for continued development - I just hope they continue to put more office space there. Office space development --> cheap office rent --> more corporate relocations and jobs from out of state!

Nabe. hahahaha. I forgot about that one. So stupid. The altered spelling of it makes it even more ridiculous, but I admit it is vaguely humorous for its mockability.

I first came across "nabe" some years back on an online discussion board that was about urban Ohio. It was used by a Clevelander now living in NYC. I actually like the term and use it myself on occasion. Much better than "hood", IMO.

andrew61, interestingly I've heard the term, "hood" used in Chicago both as a trendy term as well as a "ghetto" term such as, "Boyz in tha Hood."... Perhaps "nabe" would have a desired trendy connotation, with no ghetto flavor. Im from Milwaukee, and I only use the term neighborhood, unless I'm speaking Spanish. Then, it's: el barrio Master Jay in Milwaukee

Also seems very tall for the Viagra Triangle area which is mostly 2-3 rise buildings. I hope the triangle stays that way cause I like the setup and setback of the larger highrises. Although I know that other condo development highrise went in across the street from B&N. I think that's only like 15 stories.
If you open an "incognito" window in Chrome, you can get around the pay-wall for the Trib. I believe there's also an 11 story building planned nearby.

Usually you only see that done in areas where real estate investors and salespeople see a NEED to rebrand an area because it isn't currently as hot as they think it could be. (My favorite ridiculous neighborhood acronym from maybe 20 years ago was Brooklyn's "DUMBO" for "Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass." Yes, that was (is?) real.)

I would think River North would be the last part of the city that people would think they could increase the value on by giving it a catchy(???) nickname. I think you're more likely to see this in areas expanding South or West or even far North (Uptown / Rogers Park). (They've been trying to push the southern boundary of South Loop for awhile now, and an increasing number of sketchy landlords are calling Little Village "West Pilsen." Hell, Lagunitas had the balls from the beginning to just say they are actually *IN* Pilsen when they are clearly outside of Pilsen in Douglas Park. Maybe this will all catch on someday.)

I've heard of DUMBO... I keep thinking their neighborhood signs should include a picture of an elephant with floppy ears.

How about RoPa for Rogers Park? Or DoPa for Douglas Park? Or LiVi for Little Village? Maybe that'll get real estate moving.
