We are thinking of moving to Kenosha, WI next summer. We will be moving from Kansas. We are a couple in our 40s. How is Kenosha for families? Any areas that are not safe? I am sure snowfall is significantly more than Kansas- but any pros and cons about this move? Thanks in advance

My friend had a 1930's 1100 square foot craftsman home in Kenosha on a tiny 45 foot lot. Her property taxes were only $5,500 per year. And that was 13 years ago. Another had a $180k townhouse in Racine and his taxes were $6500 per year.

Wisconsin has Cadillac prisons and Rolls Royce schools.

That's why so many people working at the companies south of Milwaukee often live north of Chicago--and in Illinois. Property taxes in Wisconsin are unbelievable.

Move a little south of Kenosha.

lol. you are kidding right? You do realize that Illinois and Lake County in general have the highest property tax in the country. $350k home would be around $12-15K per year in Lake County.

There are good parts and bad parts to Kenosha. The city is laid out in a grid. Streets run east/west, avenues north/south. Let me know your price range is and I can give you good recommendations. You should also consider Pleasant Prairie, WI as well.

Kenosha may technically be a Chicago suburb but it's closer to Milwaukee and you'll probably get more meaningful feedback in the Milwaukee forum or general Wisconsin forum.

Right, move to Lake County IL instead where property taxes are easily 50% higher.

Don't feel bad, a lot of northwestern Indiana also considers itself Chicagoland.

Oh I am torn on this one!

On one hand I like the thought of Kenosha being considered a part of "Chicagoland" because I love Chicago and Kenosha is less than a 30 minute drive south from me.

On the other hand, it is still too far from Chicago for me to conceptualize it being an "extension" of the Chicago area.

madison19, that said, Kenosha has the Lake Geneva touristy area which really is nice, on the western side of Highway 50, and some great restaurants where I94 and Highway 50 meet.

Also, there are the Pleasant Prairie Outlets.

And going towards the lake (which has nice beaches), there is an awesome Italian deli called Tenuta's.

You ARE in between Milwaukee and Chicago, which also is a very nice location to be.

I hope if you do move, you enjoy your new location!

I have two $350K homes, and they're out in the county. Property taxes are $1,100. Our main home has a homestead exemption since my wife's disabled, and there are no property taxes.

You can see why many of our MegaCorp employees took termination packages rather than to move to Wisconsin when they consolidated operations there.

Crystal Lake and St Charles( and the Fox Valley in general) all consider themselves an extension of the Chicago area and aren't much closer. Kenosha could be considered part of either Chicago or Milwaukee area.
