I personally should have used one while living there.

But wrt the whole grey/sun-less days things, YMMV. Some people are more sensitive to that type of thing than others.

I am not sure there is a significant difference between Chicago and DC in terms of length of the day and total sunny days per year. I think DC does have more sunny days, but it is like 2 weeks more, not months more like you’d get going from San Antonio to Portland/Seattle or something more extreme like going from AZ to Chicago.

Someone else said here that DC gets twice as many snow days than Chicago in Jan. and Feb.

This is a great thread, what about transplants in mid 40's , college degreed, no kids, never married moving into the city? Chicago seem like such a great city to meet new people, I am thinking yes or do the older singles tend to move to the burbs?

Is this a joke? Chicago is one of the best places in the country for people like you. I think it is the best city in the country for people like you. You’ll love it.

Absolutely. I moved at age 40 and the only reason I am in the suburbs is because my job is in the suburbs. If I worked in the city, I’d absolutely live in the city. People generally tend to live in the suburbs because of the schools or because that is where their job is. I’m not totally sure that the recommended places in this thread are the places I would choose, but there are a lot of great neighborhoods.

A good winter wardrobe helps, along with well-timed vacations.

I have several winter coats so I'm not stuck wearing the same dreary black coat for six months. I have a huge bin of scarves and gloves and hats to cheer me up. And a huge collection of sweaters so I don't feel like I'm wearing the same thing every week.

I like to take vacations in late February/early March too--before the spring breakers hit the beaches, but late enough that I can imagine spring when I return. It helps that travel tends to be a bit cheaper at that time of the year too.

I always had to ferry kids around before/after my work commute. I'd love to live in Chicago again without those needs. We hardly went out after the kids came along. I've said it before in this thread, enjoy the city and all it has to offer!

Texas is hell for middle-aged singles.

Chicago is not
