Sounds like you're on the right track. If you get a place near the Ravenswood Metra stop it would be ideal for your commute (and much more pleasant than taking the CTA trains).

I'm surprised nobody mentioned Wicker Park. Could be because it's out of your budget OR maybe because 35 mins to the Sears Tower can be hard in some areas around Wicker. I haven't seen prices in the city in a few years so I may be totally off but we used to rent a 3 bed 2 bath for 2.5K. I know things have increased in price but a 2/2 should be doable in the area. There are lots of hipster bars, small shops, and some good parks including a couple of dog parks nearby.

I searched Zillow and it looks like you have options in your budget. Stay close to the blue line if your commute time is very important.
